Arizona scores 7 in 1st, rips Cubs 11-2 (AP)

After taking a called second strike he didn't like, Stephen Drew took matters out of the umpire's hands. Drew hit his first career grand slam to spark Arizona's seven-run first inning, a franchise record, and the Diamondbacks routed the Chicago Cubs 11-2 on Thursday night. "It can bother you, so that's why I stepped out and regrouped myself," Drew said.

Lance Berkman insists he wasn't out to exact revenge against his former team this week. But he couldn't deny enjoying the terrific game he had Thursday night. Berkman homered and drove in four runs during a nine-run sixth inning, then added a solo shot in the ninth to help the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Houston Astros 11-7.

Lance Berkman homered and drove in four runs during a nine-run sixth inning, then added a solo shot in the ninth against his former team to help the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Houston Astros 11-7 on Thursday night. Berkman's three-run shot off Fernando Abad (1-2) gave St. Louis a 5-4 lead, as a mixture of cheers and boos rained down on the slugger who spent 12 seasons with the Astros.
   
   
Rays' Zobrist has 10 RBIs in DH sweep (AP)

Ben Zobrist had a good week all in one day for the Tampa Bay Rays. Zobrist hit a two-run homer to give him 10 RBIs on Thursday and Jeff Niemann carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning as Tampa Bay swept a day-night doubleheader with a 6-1 victory over the Minnesota Twins. Zobrist went 7 for 10 with two homers and three doubles in the doubleheader.

New father Ian Desmond homered and tripled in his first game back from paternity leave and Livan Hernandez pitched eight strong innings to lead the Washington Nationals past the New York Mets 4-3 Thursday night. Desmond's solo home run in the fifth was his third of the season and it gave Washington a 4-2 lead.

Jon Lester improved to 14-0 all-time against Baltimore with eight dominating innings, Dustin Pedroia hit a tiebreaking infield single and the Boston Red Sox averted a three-game sweep with a 6-2 victory over the Orioles on Thursday night. Fausto Carmona, backed by four solo home runs, pitched seven solid innings and the Cleveland Indians earned their 10th straight home win by beating Kansas City 8-2 on Thursday night to extend the Royals' losing streak to six. Carmona (2-3) allowed two runs and five hits as Cleveland opened a 4 1/2 -game lead over the Royals and Detroit Tigers in the AL Central.

Major League Baseball says it's looking into any rules White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen might have violated by using Twitter to make derogatory comments about an umpire after being ejected. Guillen was tossed Wednesday night for arguing balls and strikes with plate umpire Todd Tichenor in the first inning of Chicago's game at Yankee Stadium.

Corey Patterson dragged the ball into the perfect spot for the Toronto Blue Jays. Patterson, who two days earlier took a big swing and homered on an 0-2 pitch at his shoulders, bunted home the tiebreaking run in the ninth inning Thursday as Toronto won its first series in three weeks with a 5-2 victory over the AL West-leading Texas Rangers.

Baseball said Thursday it would await information from the Atlanta Braves before considering any disciplinary action against pitching coach Roger McDowell, whom a fan accused of making ugly comments and gestures and threatening him with a baseball bat. Indians DH Hafner scratched from lineup (AP)

Travis Hafner has been scratched from the Cleveland Indians' lineup against the Kansas City Royals because of inflammation in his right ankle. Hafner was in manager Manny Acta's original lineup Thursday night and was on the field for batting practice. Hafner is off to a good start this season after battling a right shoulder injury for three years.
   
   
Phillies put RHP Blanton on 15-day DL (AP)

The Philadelphia Phillies have put right-hander Joe Blanton on the 15-day disabled list with an elbow injury. Vance Worley will be recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to start against the New York Mets on Friday night. Worley was 2-2 with a 2.78 ERA in four starts for the IronPigs. Blanton is 0-1 with a 5.92 ERA in four starts.

Ben Zobrist set a Tampa Bay record with eight RBIs, hitting a home run and two doubles Thursday as the Rays routed the Minnesota Twins 15-3 in the first game of a day-night doubleheader. Zobrist went 4 for 6 and scored twice. He hit an RBI single in the first inning, a three-run homer in the sixth and added two-run doubles in the seventh and ninth.


   
   
Mauer will need rehab assignment (AP)

Coming off of arthroscopic surgery on his left knee, Joe Mauer tried to take it easy in spring training to conserve his legs for the rigors of catching in the regular season. Now the Minnesota Twins are saying the All-Star wasn't physically ready to start the season, and will need a rehab assignment in the minor leagues before rejoining the team because of bilateral leg weakness.


   
   
Marlins off to unexpected fast start (AP)

Former major leaguer Orlando "El Duque" Hernandez recently joined the Florida Marlins' small bandwagon, bringing his Little League team to a game, and he snared two foul balls while watching the home team win. The Marlins' ballpark remains a great place to catch a souvenir because the abundance of elbow room ensures little competition.
   
   
Wrist injury lands Giants' DeRosa on DL (AP)

The San Francisco Giants placed infielder Mark DeRosa on the 15-day disabled list on Thursday because of left wrist inflammation and activated Emmanuel Burriss. DeRosa was in Cleveland on Wednesday to be examined by Dr. Thomas Graham, a hand specialist who performed surgery on the wrist in July. Graham found inflammation in the cartilage surrounding the wrist, but DeRosa won't need surgery.
   
   
Pirates claim OF Paul off waivers (AP)

The Pittsburgh Pirates added outfielder Xavier Paul to the 25-man roster Thursday and designated John Bowker for assignment to create space. The 26-year-old lefthander was claimed off waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday and arrived in Pittsburgh late Wednesday. Paul went 3-for-11 this season with the Dodgers and has a .233 career average and one home run in 146 at-bats over 62 games.

As their faithful drumming fan, John Adams has kept a steady beat for the Indians by pounding a large drum at Cleveland's home games since the 1970s. From his seat high atop the outfield bleachers, Adams has seen the good, bad and all kinds of ugly over the past 37 years. This year, he's been shocked.
