Jarrod Dyson made the Kansas City Royals' roster out of spring training because of his speed. That paid off Friday night with Dyson scoring the winning run on a sacrifice fly shortstop Alexi caught in shallow left field with his back to the infield in the eighth inning as the Royals rallied for a 4-3 victory over the Minnesota Twins to snap a six-game losing streak.

Two big swings by Ryan Howard made it a comfortable night on the mound for rookie fill-in Vance Worley. Howard hit two homers, including a grand slam, and drove in six runs to back six scoreless innings by Worley and lead the Philadelphia Phillies to a 10-3 victory over the New York Mets on Friday night.

The Seattle Mariners' offensive surge had to taper off eventually. It did slightly Friday night at Boston, though the pitching remained steady as the Mariners won their fourth straight with a 5-4 victory over the Red Sox. Jason Vargas pitched seven solid innings and got his first victory of the season and the Mariners got timely hits as they rallied from a 4-2 deficit.

On a tough day for the Braves, Nick Punto just added to their misery. Punto drove in two runs with an 11th-inning triple after St. Louis rallied in the ninth, giving the surging Cardinals a 5-3 victory over Atlanta on Friday night. Facing Alex Rodriguez with the bases loaded hardly fazed Ricky Romero. Because what the Toronto pitcher saw earlier in the game, now that was truly scary. Romero got right back up after a frightening line drive flattened him, twice retired Rodriguez in dicey spots and led the Blue Jays past the New York Yankees 5-3 Friday night.

Jason Marquis pitched a five-hitter to beat Tim Lincecum, and reserve outfielder Laynce Nix made the most of a rare start by connecting for a two-run homer that carried the Washington Nationals to a 3-0 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Friday night. Red Sox pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka has been pulled in the fifth inning against the Seattle Mariners with tightness in his right elbow. The right-hander walked off the field with one of Boston's athletic trainers after a meeting on the mound that included manager Terry Francona. The Toronto Blue Jays have activated outfielder Rajai Davis and promoted rookie David Cooper, and put both of them right into the starting lineup. Cooper was making his major league debut Friday night in New York against the Yankees. Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen has been suspended for two games for arguing balls and strikes and then complaining about his ejection on Twitter during a game. Major League Baseball announced Friday that Guillen also had been fined an undisclosed amount. Reds pitcher Mike Leake was sentenced to counseling and 30 hours of community service after pleading guilty Friday to a charge reduced from theft to unauthorized use of property. Braves pitcher Derek Lowe was charged with drunken driving, another blow to a team already dealing with allegations that pitching coach Roger McDowell spewed homophobic comments before a game in San Francisco last weekend.
